Ilse Malfait

Ilse Malfait lives on the edge of a nature reserve with her husband and three sons. After studying economics, she combines family life with a busy financial job. 

Fitfully she walked in 2020 to the hospital for routine treatment where, completely unexpectedly, an unlikely story began.

Swallowed up and saved by the medical world - she awakened from a weeks-long coma, underwent a long rehabilitation and then responded vigorously in a quest as to how this could ever have happened. She does not understand why there is a deafening silence around sepsis, an issue that affects so many.

The last year she has been very active in the patient organization, Sepsibel.  With her book ‘Every hour counts’ (Nov. 23) she hopes to shake up the government so that a national sepsis plan can be developed in Belgium.

Ilse Malfait lebt mit ihrem Mann und ihren drei Söhnen am Rande eines Naturschutzgebietes. Nach ihrem Wirtschaftsstudium verbindet sie ihr Familienleben mit einem vielbeschäftigten Finanzjob.

Unruhig ging sie im Jahr 2020 zur Routinebehandlung ins Krankenhaus, wo völlig unerwartet eine unwahrscheinliche Geschichte begann.

Von der medizinischen Welt verschluckt und gerettet – erwachte sie aus einem wochenlangen Koma, durchlief eine lange Rehabilitation und reagierte dann energisch auf die Frage, wie das jemals passieren konnte. Sie versteht nicht, warum es ein ohrenbetäubendes Schweigen über Sepsis gibt, ein Problem, das so viele betrifft.

Im letzten Jahr war sie sehr aktiv in der Patientenorganisation Sepsibel. Mit ihrem Buch „Jede Stunde zählt“ (23. November) hofft sie, die Regierung aufzurütteln, damit in Belgien ein nationaler Sepsis-Plan entwickelt werden kann.
