Evangelos J.Giamarellos Bourboulis

Evangelos Giamarellos is a Professor of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens since 2018. He was trained in the Immunology of Infections at the Department of Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease of Radboud University in the Netherlands. In 2012 and 2013 he served as guest Professor of the Department of Critical Care Medicine of Jena University Hospital in Germany. His main research contribution is immunomodulation in sepsis and in auto-inflammatory disorders for which he was awarded the Young Investigator Research Award by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. He has 446 publications in international peer-reviewed journals with 21,700 citations and an h-index of 73. He has contributed to the development of clarithromycin for the immunomodulatory treatment of septic shock, the recognition of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) as an auto-inflammatory disorder, and in the licensing of adalimumab for the treatment of (HS). He is chairing the Hellenic Sepsis Study Group (www.sepsis.gr). He was the leading investigator who run the phase 2 and phase 3 programs ending in the approval of anakinra for COVID-19 pneumonia in adults by the European Medicines Agency.

Evangelos Giamarellos ist seit 2018 Professor für Innere Medizin und Infektionskrankheiten an der Medizinischen Fakultät der Nationalen und Kapodistrias-Universität Athen. Er wurde in der Immunologie von Infektionen an der Abteilung für Innere Medizin und Infektionskrankheiten der Radboud-Universität in den Niederlanden ausgebildet. In den Jahren 2012 und 2013 war er Gastprofessor der Abteilung für Intensivmedizin des Universitätsklinikums Jena in Deutschland. Sein wichtigster Forschungsbeitrag ist die Immunmodulation bei Sepsis und autoinflammatorischen Erkrankungen, für die er von der European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases mit dem Young Investigator Research Award ausgezeichnet wurde. Er hat 446 Veröffentlichungen in internationalen Fachzeitschriften mit 21.700 Zitaten und einem h-Index von 73. Er hat zur Entwicklung von Clarithromycin zur immunmodulatorischen Behandlung des septischen Schocks und zur Anerkennung der Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) als autoinflammatorisches Mittel beigetragen Störung und bei der Zulassung von Adalimumab zur Behandlung von (HS). Er ist Vorsitzender der Hellenic Sepsis Study Group (www.sepsis.gr). Er war der leitende Forscher, der die Phase-2- und Phase-3-Programme leitete und in der Zulassung von Anakinra zur Behandlung von COVID-19-Pneumonie bei Erwachsenen durch die Europäische Arzneimittel-Agentur endete.
